With this in mind it is highly appropriate that we publish here David Osmond's article on Newport 'After the Rising', a detailed study that reminds us that Chartism exerted an influence on British politics for many years after the attack on the Westgate in Newport in 1839. While this is David's first publication in the journal, the other three authors have all contributed previously. In 'A Towering Misconception?' Peter Morgan Jones considers the nature of medieval church architecture and questions some traditional views. Crawshay Bailey, junior, 'The Squire of Maindiff, is the subject of Alan Jones's profile while Graham Osborne explains how the old canteen that served the workforce building the waterworks in the Grwyne Fawr valley, came to be part of Hope Baptist Chapel at Cross Keys. I hope readers will agree that the content of this issue is as interesting as it is varied. Secretary: Jenny Render Editor: Tony Hopkins Gwent Record Office Spring 2005
