54. William Jones of Llanarth (died 1667) came from a family that remained Catholic into the present century. He was the son of Sir Philip Jones of Treowen, a great royalist soldier who had just died in 1660. 55. Thomas Lewis of St. Pierre (died 1685). Like Morgan and Van, Lewis was a 'moderate' in the context of the time, a bitter opponent of Catholic influences. This group forms a sharp exception to the general political colour of the list. 56. Charles Van of Llan-wern (died 1702), another later whig and anti-papist. 57. Walter Rumsey of Llanover (died 1677), from a branch of the Rumseys long active in the law. Walter's grandfather (recently dead in 1660) was MP for Monmouthshire in 1640, and a judge. 59. Henry Milborne of Wonastow (died 1692) was an overt Catholic who was the focus of much controversy in the Popish Plot years. He was then a JP in four counties, by virtue of his office of Steward to the Marquess of Worcester. His sister Joan married a brother of William Jones of Llanarth. Henry's nephew William Milborne (MP for Milborne Port in 1660) was a crypto-Catholic. MONTGOMERYSHIRE17 60. John Pugh, Esq. 1000 61. Owen of Ruseston, Esq. 1000 62. Blayney, Esq. 1000 DL, MP 63.
