The answer is inevitably contained in the title to this article they all bear the name Beck. Roger Beck, who died aged eighty-two in July 1923, was praised in a lengthy obituary in The South Wales Daily Post as "Swansea's chief benefactor" and "one of its noblest characters". The obituary has provided a mine of information about one who, it must be noted, was chairman of The Daily Post Company. Roger Beck's association with Swansea began in 1872 when he came from London to seek his fortune in steelmaking. He had worked in the
