MORGAN JENKINS, 1840-1921 HIS STORY, HIS WHOLESALE BUSINESS IN SWANSEA, 1870-1917 AND THE FIRM OF MORGAN JENKINS & SON, 1917-1990 B. V. M. JENKINS The firm of Morgan Jenkins & Sons. wholesale drapers, was established in Swansea in 1917, and its history covers much of the 20th century. However, the story goes back much further. The firm's founder, Morgan Jenkins, was the youngest son of hill-farmer Charles Jenkins and his wife Mary, of Penybont Uchaf Farm, Cwm Irfon, near Llanwrtyd Wells, Breconshire. He was born on the farm on May 29th, 1840. At the age of 15, Morgan Jenkins left the farm on his pony, with five shillings in his pocket, and rode across the hills until he came to Caio, near Pumsaint, where he found employment in the village store. He later worked in a draper and haber- dasher's shop in Llanwrtyd Wells, and then managed a small branch of the business, a shop (later the Post Office) in the hamlet of Cefn-Gorwydd, a few miles east Penybont Uchaf Farm, Cwm Irfon, near Llanwrtyd Wells.
