Edited by E. G. Parry The cover shows two of John Lloyd's important possessions as an officer on an East India Company ship. Hadley's quadrant, shown on the front cover, was an essential item of equipment for a midshipman taking celestial observations to determine a ship's position at sea. This one was made c.1768. The watch was made in about 1755 by Samuel Toulmin, one of the leading London watchmakers of the eighteenth century. There are two similar watches in the British Museum. The quadrant and watch are owned by Mr Richard Lloyd, the great-great-great grandson of Captain John Lloyd. The illustrations are taken from photographs by Ken Jones.
